In the heart of Hainan province lies a vast tropical rainforest, extending across an area of over 4,200 square kilometers. The most diverse and best-preserved island tropical rainforest in China, it is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including the world’s most endangered primate, the Hainan gibbon. In 2021, under a program personally overseen by Xi Jinping aimed at safeguarding biodiversity and protecting the environment, the rainforest was designated as one of the country’s first national parks. President Xi has stressed that Hainan should become a showcase, revealing to the world the benefits of China’s national park system.
