The Eddie Murphy comeback is in full swing as Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F hits Netflix today (July 3).

Fast-talking detective Axel Foley is back for another mission, this time joined by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon in the sequel 30 years in the making.

When Axel’s daughter Jane (played by Paige) is in danger, he returns to Beverly Hills and teams up with his old pals John Taggart (John Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) again to crack open a conspiracy.

The sequel dropped exclusively on Netflix this Wednesday, and die-hard fans of the series have already been streaming it, so it could become one of the platform’s biggest hits of the summer by the weekend.

Viewers have been loving the nostalgic throwback to the original film, which released in 1984.

“#BeverlyHillsCopAxelF was a 6/10 for me, maybe even a 7. It was definitely funny but I liked Bad Boys: Ride or Die better,” one viewer said.

“But I also want a Beverly Hills Cop 5 with the daughter again tbh.”

“This Beverly Hills Cop movie would have been good in theaters,” another wrote.

“I’ve been a fan of this series since I was a kid. This movie is a good addition. I hope there’s another one.”

One armchair critic posted: “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The movie is SAFE…in the sense of callbacks to the previous movies. Lots of nostalgia.

“But when has safe not been good. There is a potential for another movie or 2. Needed some Brandon T Jackson on the next one.”

“It brings me great pleasure to report that BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F ain’t no banana in the tailpipe. It’s the real deal and a hilarious nostalgia trip,” another thrilled fan said.

However, other viewers complained the overdue fourth instalment featured a few too many callbacks to the original when it should have done its own thing.

“Sure #BeverlyHillsCopAxelF is an improvement on the abysmal Beverly Hills Cop III but that’s hardly an achievement,” one Netflix subscriber said.

“The fact that you get blasted with Glenn Frey’s The Heat Is On straight off the bat tells you immediately that this latest outing relies SOLELY on nostalgia!”

As for more sequels, a fifth and even sixth outing could be in the works if Axel F is a hit, as Eddie recently told Variety “we have a couple of stories in mind”.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is available to stream on Netflix.
